CME Courses: Rheumatology

Facilitating Diagnosis and Management of Fibromyalgia CME/CE e-Newsletter see details » « hide

CME/CE Credits: ACCME, ANCC
Activity Expires: 7/7/13 —49 days
Overview

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic medical illness with significant debilitating consequences. It needs to be diagnosed as early as possible so that effective, evidence-based treatment can be initiated. Patients often face substantial delays in having their FM diagnosed and treated because of lack of confidence among clinicians in their ability to diagnose FM and distinguish it from conditions with similar symptoms. Diagnosis can be facilitated by routine use of current American College of Rheumatology clinical diagnostic criteria. Treatment options include a number of pharmacologic agents approved for use in FM, as well as various other pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies.

Balancing Evidence and the Art of Clinical Practice: Evolving Strategies in the Targeted Approach to Treating Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis see details » « hide

CME/CE Credits: ACCME, ANCC
Activity Expires: 11/16/13 —181 days
Overview

Over the last two decades, advances in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have caused a "sea change" in the way that clinicians approach the management of RA. This movement towards a "treat-to-target" approach is based upon evidence that (a) proves early treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) results in less joint damage and better physical functioning; (b) demonstrates improved outcomes with biologic agents; (c) provides validated core variables and composite measures to reliably assess disease activity; (d) shows treating to target regimens lead to better outcomes than traditional approaches; and (e) confirms that remission can be achieved in many patients.

Important strides have been made in understanding the pathophysiologic basis of many inflammatory conditions in recent years, but rheumatology remains a discipline in which diagnosis is rooted in the medical history skillfully extracted from the patient, the careful physical examination, and the discriminating use of laboratory tests and imaging. Moreover, selection of the most appropriate therapy for patients with rheumatic diseases also remains heavily reliant upon clinical experience. Medical disciplines such as rheumatology that depend significantly upon clinical wisdom are prone to the development of systems of ‘Pearls’ and ‘Myths,’ related to the diseases they call their own, a ‘Pearl’ being a nugget of truth about the diagnosis or treatment of a particular disease that has been gained by dint of clinical experience and a ‘Myth’ being a commonly held belief that influences the practice of many clinicians – but is false. This book will pool together the clinical wisdom of seasoned, expert rheumatologists who participate in the care of patients with autoimmune diseases, systemic inflammatory disorders, and all other rheumatic conditions.

Integrative Rheumatology offers a new and much-needed perspective in disease and symptom management, blending conventional medicine with alternative approaches not typically included in a Western medical practice. While conventional treatments can provide considerable symptomatic relief and can even slow the progression of many rheumatologic conditions, integrative treatment incorporating lifestyle interventions, mind-body approaches, and practices such as acupuncture and meditation into conventional medical therapies can improve quality of life, reduce medication dosages, and are generally better tolerated. In this book, researchers and clinicians highlight specific gaps in conventional rheumatologic care and examine how alternative approaches may be ideally suited to address these missed opportunities. Here, the authors introduce topics not typically addressed in conventional rheumatology texts, including nutritional therapies, exercise, herbal medicine, mind/body approaches, Ayurveda, and energy medicine. The contributors, all of whom have a background in academic medicine, share the approaches that they have found most effective in their own practices, basing their work on the best scientific evidence available. Ultimately, an understanding of complementary and alternative approaches to healing can help clinicians care for their patients using the best proven therapies to modify disease progress and relieve pain and disability.
